Julia Gorbunova

Julia Gorbunova is an artist who treats mosaic as a living, pliable material, taking it beyond its traditional reading.
Working with texture, volume and light, she turns mosaic into an instrument for examining space and the way form meets its surroundings. Her practice spans abstract composition, sculptural objects and panels that bring together classical and experimental materials — glass, stone, smalti, cement, plaster and recycled cardboard.
Her works are built as a dialogue between order and chaos, natural motif and abstraction. They register states of transition and change, opening mosaic to a contemporary, many-layered reading.
She draws on natural processes — rhythms, tectonic shifts, the play of light and shadow. Those observations return as dynamic form, fluid shifts of texture and a sense of movement present in every work. In her practice mosaic becomes a way of speaking with the world and carrying its energy into the space of art.
